Lesson 71: The Story of Samuel
Samuel's mother, Hannah, had prayed to God and asked God to send her a little boy (1 Samuel 1:9-11). God heard Hannah's prayer and sent her Samuel. Hannah promised to give Samuel to serve God. So Hannah took Samuel to the temple when he was about three years old. At the temple the priest Eli taught Samuel all about God. Every year Samuel's mother and father visited him. Hannah made a new coat every year for Samuel.
Samuel grew up to serve God and the people all liked Samuel very much. Eli had two sons who were also priests but they were wicked priests and did not teach the people what was right. Eli was a good priest but he made the mistake of not punishing and correcting his two sons for their wickedness.
One night when Samuel was in bed, God called to him. Samuel thought it was Eli calling, but Eli told Samuel that it must be God wishing to speak to him. Eli told Samuel that if he heard the call again he should answer and say, "Speak Lord for thy servant heareth".
God did call Samuel again and told him that Eli and his family would have to be punished because they were not serving God properly.
Let us learn from this story that God wants us to serve Him in a proper way. God tells us in the Bible how we should act. We must not be careless like Eli's two sons. We must serve God in the right way. One way we can serve God properly is to be loving and kind to everyone.
