Lesson 65: Gideon's Army

Gideon called for the men of Israel and made an army. Gideon had many men in his army. But God was going to win this battle, and God did not need so many men. (Judges 7:2) Gideon spoke to the men and told them that if any of them were afraid, they should return to their homes. But there was still too many men. Gideon took his army down to a brook to drink. God told Gideon to separate the men. All the men who lapped up the water in their hands were to be set aside in one group. All the men who kneeled down on their knees to drink the water were to be sent home. So now there was just 300 men, those who lapped the water out of their hands. They were the men in Gideon's army. Gideon was sure that so few men could not fight against so many men in the Midianite army. But Gideon had faith in God. So Gideon waited for God to help him and show him what to do.

Gideon gave each of his men a trumpet and a pitcher. Inside the pitcher they were to carry a torch or lamp. Gideon told his men to do just as he told them. Gideon took his men and they walked very quietly down to the camp of the Midianites. It was very late at night so the Midianites were fast asleep. Gideon told his men to break their pitchers and blow their trumpets. They also were to shout, "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon." This made so much noise that the Midianites awakened out of their sleep. They saw the lights from the Israelites and heard all the trumpets. They thought that there were thousands of Israelites. They were so frightened that they ran away and many of them ran into each other with their swords. The Israelites were never bothered by the Midianites again.

Now the Israelites could grow their wheat and have plenty to eat again. They were very thankful to God for his great help. We know that sometimes the Israelites forgot God. We must try not to forget God. We must try to be thankful always and do as God commands.
