Lesson 60: Joshua the New Leader
We remember how the Israelites were afraid to go in to take the promised land. God punished them by sending them back into the wilderness for forty years. When the forty years were past it was time again for them to go in to take the land. Now, a new leader had to be chosen. God had told Moses that he would not be able to go into the land even though he had been their leader for many years. But Moses loved the people, and he prayed to God and asked Him to choose a new leader (Deuteronomy 3:23-28).
God chose Joshua for the new leader. God and Moses told Joshua to be brave and not to be afraid. Joshua had a big job ahead of him. He was to lead all of the Israelites, and there were very many of them. But Joshua was a faithful man. He trusted in God. Joshua was one of the men who had brought back the good report of the land. He was not afraid. Joshua knew how much God had done in the past for the Israelites. Joshua also knew if they would try to serve God that God would bless them.
Before Moses died, God allowed Moses to go up into a mountain, and there God showed Moses all of the promised land. Moses could see how well everything grew in the land. He could see the nice green valleys. Moses could see that it was a good land just as God had promised.
