Lesson 54: The Burning Bush
Moses lived with Pharoah's daughter many years. Then one day, Moses saw some Egyptians being very mean to an Israelite. Moses went out and helped the Israelite. When Pharoah heard that Moses helped an Israelite, he was very angry. Moses had to hurry to get away from Pharoah, so he fled into the land of Midian. In Midian, Moses married Zipporah. They had two sons, Gershom and Eliezer. Moses looked after the flocks of Zipporah's father, whose name was Jethro.
One day while Moses was in the field taking care of the flocks, he went to Horeb. There Moses saw a burning bush. It must have seemed strange to him that the bush was on fire but it was not burning up. Moses went forward to see the wonderful thing. From the burning bush, God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:4-10). God told Moses that He was now ready for Moses to go into Egypt and save the Hebrews from the wicked Pharoah.
Moses told God that he did not think that he was good enough to go before Pharoah. Moses was also afraid that the Israelites would not believe that God sent him. God helped Moses by giving him three signs. Moses was to show these signs to the wicked Pharoah.
The first sign that God gave to Moses was turning Moses' rod into a serpent. God also showed Moses how to turn it back into a rod. The second sign was that Moses was to put one of his hands inside his shirt and when he took it out it would be as white as snow. Then when Moses put his hand inside again, it returned to its normal color, the same as his other hand. For a third sign, Moses was to take water from the river and pour it on the ground and the water would turn into blood.
Moses was to do all of these signs before the Israelites and Pharoah. Now Moses told God that he did not think that he could speak well enough. God then said to Moses, your brother Aaron will speak to the people for you.
When Moses and Aaron performed all these signs to the Israelites they believed that God was with Moses and Aaron, and that God was now going to keep His promise to save the children of Israel.
