Lesson 52: Paul the Missionary
A missionary is a person who travels to different towns, cities and countries preaching the gospel, or the good news, about God and Jesus. Now that Paul understood about Jesus, he wanted very much to teach others about Jesus, too. God was with Paul and directed him to go to different places where many people learned about Jesus and were baptized.
Sometimes the people would not listen to Paul. Sometimes they drove him out of their cities and Paul had to travel to other places.
One time Paul had a vison (a dream). In this dream, Paul saw a man from another country asking him to come and teach the people there. Paul took another disciple named Silas with him. But, here too, the people made trouble for Paul, and soon they sent Paul and Silas to prison.
At night in the prison, Paul and Silas sang praises to God. Then there was an earthquake. All the prison doors were opened and all the chains on the prisoners were loosened. The jailer, who kept guard of the prison, awakened and when he saw all the doors of the prison opened, he became afraid. Paul called to him and told him that all the prisoners were still there. Paul taught the jailer about Jesus. The jailer took Paul and Silas to his home, even in the middle of the night. The jailer and all his family believed in Jesus and were baptized (Acts of the Apostles 16:29-34). In the morning the rulers sent word to the prison that Paul and Silas could go free.
Paul later returned to Jerusalem preaching in many cities on his way. The Jews in Jerusalem caused more trouble for Paul and again he was sent to prison. Because they could not find any fault with Paul, he was allowed to go to Rome. Paul had always wanted to go to Rome so that he could teach more people about Jesus. The rulers in Rome treated Paul very kindly, and for two years he taught many people of the ways of God and of Jesus.
