Lesson 48: Mary and Martha
In the city called Bethany lived two sisters and a brother. Their names were Mary, Martha and Lazarus.
Mary and Martha invited Jesus to come and stay at their home one time. Mary and Martha must have been pleased to have Jesus come to their home. They knew what a wonderful man Jesus was since he performed miracles and made sick people well. Mary and Martha must have worked very hard to have their home real nice and clean, just as our mothers and fathers do.
When Jesus arrived, Mary and martha were very happy to see Jesus. Mary went and sat at Jesus' feet so she could hear all that Jesus said. Lazarus and some of the disciples were probably there also. But Martha was still busy getting the meal ready and making sure everything was all set.
When Martha saw Mary sitting at Jesus' feet, she asked Jesus if he didn't care that Mary had left her all the work to do. Jesus told Martha that she was careful and troubled about many things, but that Mary had chosen the good part that would not be taken away from her.
Jesus probably was not cross with Martha, but he wanted her to realize that there is time when we should be busy working and cleaning and preparing food. But there is also a time when we should be willing to stop our work and listen to God's Word, just as Mary was doing.
Martha and Mary had time before Jesus arrived to prepare the house and the food, and when Jesus arrived Martha should have stopped and listened to God's word.
We must remember that God's Word is very important (2 Timothy 2:15). We must not forget it. It must always be in our minds. We shouldn't think that other work has to be done first. It doesn't. God's Word is more important than anything else.
