Lesson 43: The Twelve Apostles
As Jesus went from city to city preaching the Word of God, there were many people who followed him. These people were called disciples. A disciple is one who follows. From these disciples Jesus was going to choose twelve to teach the word of God and to help him. These twelve were called apostles or one sent out.
One day when John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him he said, "Behold the Lamb of God."(John 1:29-34) John was telling the people that Jesus was the Messiah of whom he spoke. Two of John the Baptist's disciples or followers heard what John the Baptist said and they followed Jesus. One of them was Andrew, and the other was John. When Jesus saw these two men he told them to follow him. Andrew and John were very happy to be with Jesus.
The next day when Andrew saw his brother Simon he told him that he had found the "Messiah" or Jesus. When Jesus saw Simon, he told him that his name would be changed to Peter, which means a rock. Peter became Jesus' third apostle.
The following day Jesus was walking along the road, and he met a man named Philip. He said to him, "Follow me." Philip, like the rest of the apostles, was very happy to be one of Jesus' followers. Philip then went and found his friend Nathanael. Nathanael talked with Jesus, and he, too, became his follower. (John 1:45-51) With these five men Jesus began his work.
Probably at first the apostles did not remain with Jesus all the time but went back to their work. But the time came when Jesus wanted them with him. He knew where to find them. Jesus went down to the Sea of Galilee, and there he saw Peter and Andrew washing their fishing nets. They had worked all night and had caught nothing. Jesus went into Peter's boat and taught the people on the shore. Then he told Peter to go out into the deep part of the sea and to let their nets down. They caught so many fish that their nets began to break. Then he said to Peter and Andrew, "Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. ." So Peter and Andrew brought their boat to the shore and left it and followed Jesus, to help him preach the Word of God to all.
