Lesson 37: Pharaoh's Dreams

In our last lesson we learned about the dreams that the butler and the baker had, and how Joseph asked the butler to remember him when he got out of prison.

It was two years later when the butler remembered Joseph. He remembered when Pharoah had a dream and didn't understand it. Pharoah wanted all the wise men brought in to him so they could try to tell Pharoah the meaning of the dreams. Then, finally, the butler remembered about Joseph and how he had told the butler and the baker the meaning of their dreams. So Pharoah had Joseph brought out of prison.

Pharoah told Joseph that he dreamed about seven fat and healthy cows eating in a field, and about seven other cows that were thin and ill, and that these thin cows ate up the fat cows. Pharoah also told Joseph that he dreamed about seven fat ears of corn and seven thin ears of corn, and that the seven thin ears of corn ate up the fat ears of corn.

Pharoah asked Joseph if he could tell him the meaning of the dreams. Joseph told Pharoah that God was the only one who could tell the true meaning of dreams. (Genesis 41:15-16)

God, through Joseph, told Pharoah that the seven fat cows and the seven fat ears of corn stood for seven years when there would be lots of food in the land, it would be a time of plenty in Egypt. The seven thin cows and the seven thin ears of corn stood for seven years when there would not be enough to eat in the land of Egypt. It would be a time of famine.

After Joseph told Pharoah the meaning of his dreams, Pharoah was very thankful and he asked Joseph to be head over all his house and over all the land of Egypt. There was no one greater than Joseph in the land of Egypt except Pharoah. Joseph's job was to gather up all the extra food in Egypt and save for the years when there would not be enough to eat.

In our next lesson, we will learn about the people who came to buy food from Joseph.
