Lesson 15: The Birth of Jesus Part 1

Our stories so far, have been taken from the Old Testament in the Bible. For a while now we are going to have stories from the New Testament. The reason it is called the Old Testament is that it was written before the New Testament. The Old Testament was written before Christ was born. The New Testament was written after Christ was born. The two parts of the Bible make up our complete Bible and the whole Bible is the Word of God. God directed (helped) all the people who wrote the Bible.

Many times in the Old testament we are told that Jesus Christ would be born. Even in the very beginning of the Bible at the time of Adam and Eve, God promised a Saviour who would be Jesus. In the promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob God promised a "seed" who was to be Christ Jesus who would be a blessing to all people. (Genesis 3:15) All these things were foretold many, many years before Jesus was born.

Now we come to the New Testament and the time when Jesus is about to be born. An angel of God (angels are messengers of God who do His work) spoke to a young woman named Mary. (Luke 1:26-32) Mary lived in the city of Nazareth. Mary loved and worshipped God. The angel that visited her told her that she was to have a son (a baby boy). The angel told Mary that the baby should be named Jesus. Jesus means Saviour. The angel also told Mary that God was to be the father of Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God as well as the son of Mary.

At the time that the angel spoke to Mary, she was engaged to a man named Joseph, who also lived in Nazareth. Both Mary and Joseph were descendants of King David. In the Old Testament, we are told that Jesus also was to be a descendent of King David. Before Joseph and Mary were married, the angel appeared to Joseph and told him that Mary's child was to be called Jesus, "for he shall save the people from their sins".
