Lesson 8: The Land of Promise

Today we are going to learn about some wonderful promises that God made with Abraham. Do you know what a promise is? Sometimes our mothers and fathers make a promise to us. Perhaps they might promise to take us on a picnic. If they make a promise to us, we do look forward to the promise. Our mothers and fathers do their best to keep their promise by taking us on the picnic. Now we know that God has much more power than anyone else. So we know that whatever God promises, He will do. Abraham knew this too because Abraham believed everything that God told him. Because Abraham trusted God so much, God knew that Abraham was a good man.

God promised to bless Abraham and to give him the land for an everlasting possession. (Genesis 13:14-17) That meant that God was going to give Abraham not only the land of Canaan, but the whole world. Also, Abraham was to live forever. God also promised Abraham that He would bless all people and that they, too, could live forever, if they believed in Abraham's seed (or son) Jesus Christ. (Genesis 12:2-3)

Abraham knew that these were wonderful promises. Abraham knew that the people in his day died and did not have anything forever. We do not have anything forever either, because when we get old, we die. But God will give Abraham and all that believe in him everlasting life so that we will not ever die again. We each can live on earth forever, if we believe in Abraham and in Jesus Christ. (Galatians 3:16)

We will get everlasting life and live in the earth forever when Jesus returns to the earth and sets up the kingdom of God. This is a very happy time for us to look forward to. So we must try to be worthy of such a wonderful promise, just as Abraham was faithful and good.

Abraham showed that he had great faith and trust in God. God had promised to give Abraham a son, but Abraham did not have his son, Isaac, until he was 100 years old. This was a long time for Abraham to wait. Abraham waited and trusted and knew that God would do whatever He said He would do. Abraham had faith in God and the promises that God made to him.
