Lesson 7: The Call of Abraham
We will now learn about Abraham and how he and all the people who believe in him will be blessed by God.
Abraham lived in the city of Ur. In this city the people had very fine homes and there were many fine buildings. But the people did not obey God. They worshipped idols. They thought that the moon was greater than God. But, we know that God made the moon and we thank God for everything, because God gave us everything.
God wanted Abraham to leave this place because God knew that Abraham was a good man. So God spoke to Abraham and told him to leave the city and go to a land that God would show him. So Abraham, his wife Sarah, his nephew Lot, his father Terah, and his brother Nahor, all left the city of Ur. They would now have to live in tents. It would not be very easy for them to travel in those days. But Abraham had faith in God and believed that God would bless him if he obeyed God.
They all went as far as the city of Haran and stayed there for a time. Then Abraham's father, Terah, died. God spoke to Abraham and told him to travel further. God said to Abraham, "I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing; and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed" (Genesis 12:2-3).
Then Abraham, Sarah, and Lot came to the city of Shechem. Abraham was 75 years old then. Now God spoke to Abraham at Shechem and told him that this was the land that God would give to him. Abraham was very thankful to God and worshipped Him. God was also well pleased with Abraham because Abraham showed God that he had faith in God. Abraham is called the friend of God. We are told in the Bible that we can share these wonderful promises that God gave Abraham, if we believe in Abraham and in Jesus (Galatians 3:26-29).
